Don,

Since most of us are using the same type of equipment, pickup trucks and trailers, I think he/she means "Why don't you Legal guys stop picking on us Illegal guys."

It would appear that they think all legal carriers are big guys and we need to leave the illegals (little guys ) alone. What a hoot!!!! This place is so much fun.

I Guess Don is not as mean as he was labeled...He truely care about the family...

Good luck Don...I Did the same thing on the last day of 2005.Got out of trucking and soon after needed Open heart surgery.

Burning feeling starting from the left armpit to the sturnum on the left side only.

One artery was blocked 90% and the ascending aorta had a bulge right outside the heart.

The simple operation where they enter the artery by the groin to open the blocked artery did not work.

They cut the sturnum in half, bypass your heart to freeze it during the operation, change your pipes ( cutting 1 1/2 inch of your aorta and replacing it with a teflon piece and replace your bad portion of your artery with the mammery one instead of from your leg ) restart your heart and make sure there are no leaks.Staple your sturnum back in place and glue your skin back together over the sturnum.

And voila...you bought yourself a super expensive new 60 year lease of life.

So I can understand why you'd like to quit.Things can pop out of the blue for no reason at all.

One day, one's health is super fine, the next day burning attacks start while walking normally from the sofa to the car.

Never neglect anything, one day It could be fatal.

I've been absolutely normal since, like nothing had happened.

Take good care of yourself Don.Enjoy what remains while you can

How can you tell between an illegal carrier and a legal carrier?

What is the difference between a broker and a carrier?

to see if you have a legal carrier ask them for their DOT & MC numbers, also there is authority to haul house hold goods,an u can check them on www.saferweb.com,a broker has many resoures they get loads for (carriers) they also have a number,an always check on how they pay ,some go 30-60-90 days.well thats my 2 cents.jack Indian

From the FMCSA web site..........

Interstate Operating Authority and Financial Responsibility

Companies that operate as “for hire” carriers (for a fee or other compensation) that transport passengers or federally regulated commodities, or arrange for their transport, in interstate commerce are also required to have interstate operating authority.

Operating Authority ("MC," "FF," or "MX" number)
FMCSA operating authority is also referred to as an "MC," "FF," or "MX" number, depending on the type of authority that is granted. Unlike the USDOT Number application process, a company may need to obtain multiple operating authorities to support its planned business operations. Operating Authority dictates the type of operation a company may run, the cargo it may carry, and the geographical area in which it may legally operate.

Financial Responsibility and Exemptions
All of this also dictates the level of insurance/financial responsibilities a company must maintain. Carriers not required to have operating authority include Private carriers, "for-hire" carriers that exclusively haul exempt commodities (cargo that is not federally regulated), or carriers that operate exclusively within a federally designated "commercial zone" that is exempt from interstate authority rules. A commercial zone is, for example, a geographic territory that includes multiple states bordering on a major metropolitan city, such as Virginia/Maryland/Washington, DC.

What is a USDOT Number?

Companies that operate commercial vehicles transporting passengers or hauling cargo in interstate commerce must be registered with the FMCSA and must have a USDOT Number. Also, commercial intrastate hazardous materials carriers who haul quantities requiring a safety permit must register for a USDOT Number. The USDOT Number serves as a unique identifier when collecting and monitoring a company’s safety information acquired during audits, compliance reviews, crash investigations, and inspections.

Some Tips...........

Companies Must Have Proper Transport Authority

A small amount of research can save you a lot of problems. This is as true of auto transport companies as of any other companies. All auto transporters need registration with the department of transportation and need an active MC and USDOT number. Forwarders and brokers are an exception. They need only MC numbers. Check a company’s credentials by searching at safersys.org for their company name or USDOT number. Also along with valid USDOT and MC numbers, the carrier should have specific credentials to transport motor vehicles.

Cargo Insurance and Liability

In addition to USDOT numbers, carriers must have liability and cargo insurance. The amounts of insurance coverage vary, however you must ask for proof of coverage before hiring a transporter. Insurance information can be confirmed at safersys.org or by making a call to the transporters insurance company. Check that the insurance cover is enough to cover the value of your car. Enquire about any limits on insurance and if necessary ask for additional insurance. See this article with more information on auto transport company insurance issues.

Check References and Records

There are a number of ways to verify an auto transporters authenticity. Check with someone in a related field like a car salesman. Check with the Better Business Bureau for any complaints being filed against your company and how issues were resolved. See if you can get references from past customers of the company. Search online for any customer reviews if available.

Auto Shipping Details

Ask your company about specific details, policies and procedures. Ask about inspection, pick up and delivery procedures, as well as the timeline. Check for any restrictions that you must know about. Ask the company what the best way is to prepare your car for transport. Get a written contract and make sure to read it carefully.
