I have received many questions but no bids. I am trying to start a new trailer sales business in Alaska and have gotten quotes like 10,000 from other major companies per trailer but that is totally outragious I need to find the lowest price so I can keep my cost low for the coustomer thats why I wanted to start the business in the first place. What can I do to get some resonable bids? Any type of input would be greatly appreciated. I know the gas prices are through the roof right now but come on! Please help.

Okay, here is my two cents, for what it is worth... For your first problem, I would think it would follow under the old adage from the real-estate market, LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION!!! Dude, you are in Alaska for crying out loud! You ever notice things cost more in Alaska? I did! It is because it cost more to get up there to deliver your (Alaska’s) freight, and most times, there is not any freight coming back out, that means you (I) have to come out of Alaska empty, that means you are (I’m) NOT MAKING MONEY....

Your second problem, move your business to Seattle Washington, some where along I-5 and I-90, then you will be in a PRIME freight lane, and would see BIG SAVINGS IN SHIPPING from the major motor carriers!!!

Finally, your last statement. YES, fuel cost drastically affects the end price you would see! so if fuel goes up, you price will go up, and if fuel goes down, you will see a savings there as well, to put it to you short. In addition, remember these commercial trucks, both the hotshots, AND the big rigs average between 5 & 10 miles to a gallon loaded and / or empty...

Additionally, so that you know, a hot shot has a GVWR of 26,000 lbs or less. An expeditor is between 26,001 lbs GVWR and 34,000 lbs GVWR (I maybe off a hair). In addition, the big rigs can handle loads from 34,001 lbs to 45,000 lbs giving a gross weight to the truck of as much as 80,000 lbs GVWR, with out any special permits to conduct 75% to 90% of day, to day operations.

I.e. if a big truck can legally haul 80,000 lbs, and the truck weighs around 35,000 lbs empty, full of fuel, with the driver and gear, that means you can load on this truck around 44,000 lbs +/- of cargo, but not more than 45,000 lbs!

Hope this helps you select the right truck, for the right job! Good luck on your new venture....

I'm just curious as to what would be involved with driving through Canada.  I know you would need a passport, but what else?

We hauled an exhibit to Anchorage last year and went through Canada to get there. The paperwork was complicated, but not impossible. I think it ended up costing us about $700 in permits, which really surprised me as I was expecting much less, and unfortunately for me Ihad not included it in my bid.

At the time wewere usinga Ford F-350 and a 2005 Haulmark enclosed trailer, 44' and our registered weight was 32,000#.

The food and fuel prices were OUTRAGEOUS, restaurants and lodging were scarce. Lucky for us we had makeshift living quarters in the front of our trailer, saved a lot of money by staying on campgrounds. It was fun, too!

The trip through Canada to Anchorage was well worth the extra expense, as the scenery and wildlife were spectacular. When we got to Tok,Alaskaweevenhad to buy ALASKA license plateswhich was less costly than a temporary permit.

Still have them, what anunique souvenir they made!

The WORST part was the Alaska Highway, whichwas and probably still is under construction in many parts. Be sure to install some kind of protection on your headlights and grille (we attached screens to our brushguard), drive very slowly on the rocks and pull way over when you meet some nimrod who doesn't realize his excessive speed is slinging gravel all over everybody else. Allow yourself EXTRA EXTRA EXTRA travel time!

Oh, yeah...this is really cool...this was in July and the dayswere REALLY long! Itwas hard to get used to so many hours of daylight, it's likewe just wanted to keep going and going.

If you want to message me, I can try to tell you what you have to do to run up there. And NO we did not need a passport then, but maybe things have changed?

Now, MONTREAL, on a previous trip was a living nightmare. That's a whole other story. I feel sorry for anybody who has to go there and has never done it before!

We run Quebec but have preinspection coming back Trailers are sealed w/cable so just pull in to CN, they say go to US, Show dr. lisc. and frt bill. Us says give us $60.00, never ask what for and put her in gear. Do it all out the window and never leave  the truck. If you had a DUI even when you were 16 you canot get into CN. They consider you a convicted felon even if your 55 yrs old.

Keep in mind maps are deceiving, the distances involved to-from Alaska are frequently longer than coast-to-coast.

Probably would be best to either get a unit yourself or make a deal with a local and give him a contract to haul them  at set prices ahead of time and lastly maybe do what the other guy suggested and get them to seattle

!!Protect yourself and your property!!

Did you acquire and VERIFY the validity of your chosen Carrier's FEDERALLY MANDATED DOT & MC #'s as per the UShip User Agreement?

http://www.uship.com/user_agreement.aspx

Note: Did you know that NO active "MC #" = No COMMERCIAL insurance?

OOPS !!!!!!!

INTERSTATE" transport requires an ACTIVE "MC" number! You verify it at the Government's "REAL TIME" web site: http://li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov/LIVIEW/pkg_html.prc_limain
