Hi Im new here and trying to figure out the proper way to do everything. Any advice would be great. I've already applied for DOT & MC NUMBERS, All of my paperwork is done just awaiting to become active.
What I'm unsure about is some of the paper work I have heard of that I need to have done before my audit (oh boy) and monthly or what not [Ermm] .
I had someone call me from Foley Services trying to sell me a bunch of stuff and I need to know what I need and what I don't need, as this is a very expensive business to start and I don't want to spend more than I have to.
I'm NOT Cdl because I will be Under 26,000 pounds. This is something that my fiancées and I will be starting together but she will not be driving, however the business is registered in her name on our DBA and everything under the FMCSA is under mine. I was told I need the following:
A DOT Physical (Required even though not cdl?
A pre-employment Drug test (Do i need this even though not cdl?)
Driver Quailfication Pack
Initial Screening Pack
Background Check
Driving Record and So Forth. Can anyone Please Please tell me what all paper work I need to have for my Audit as I really want to pass this thing. NC says I don't need a log book but it wouldn't hurt to keep one, and thats no problem my truck does have a sleeper on it.
Anyways can you tell me what paper work I may need and if its easier for another company to take care of this if so do you know one or is it not as complicated as it sounds. Also if I should do it my self where should I find the forms? Just trying to be legal begal! Thanks for any info, it seems as if everyone I call doesn't really know because there is such a fine line between cdl and hot-shots!!
Thanks

| I too am new and awaiting authority. I have been "lurking in the shadows" of this forum for several months absorbing as much info as possible. I have waded through alot of info and think I have gotten myself going in the right direction. I recently recieved, via a free e-mail offer, the Roadside Inspections & DOT Compliance Audits Maunal from JJ Keller. I purchased the update package and then recieved an offer for the free Fleet Safety Compliance Manual and purchased the update service for this as well. Being legal aint cheap!!! I am currently building my own DQ file, and am creating my own forms. (Ann. Review of Record & Cert of Violations so far) I would be more than happy to share those with you (if I'm not breaking any rules by doing so). The forms are created in Microsoft Excel. I drive tractor trailer part-time so I had the med cert anyways, just copied and placed in my file. Also just copied my D.L. and placed in file as well. I have accepted my CDL in lieu of a road test, as appears to be allowable by regs. You should be able to check your own D.L. record, for a small fee, through your State level BMV. $10.00 for a 10 yr report here in Maine. Check out my profile (not completely accurate - reflects what I will be in about 6 weeks - not what I am today) and run my numbers and feel free to e-mail me. I have taken alot of good info from here and am willing to share if I can, plus I'm sitting on some pretty good info here, I have used and trusted Keller in my former life also. The other one printed resource that stays at the top of my desk right now is the checklist you have probably already seen on here. Good luck to you, I think I might be able to relate to what your going through right now. And again if I can be of any help (limited, because I'm new too) please feel free to contact me. | Disclaimer: I am not a part-time salesman for JJ Keller ! Word of Caution: Many people will try to sell you many services ( answering machine had meltdown day after MC application was filed lol) I chose Keller's products because I have used them extensively, which is probably why I recieved the e-mail offers to begin with. Still haven't chosen a process agent though, however I do have plenty of offers to evaluate. Another Word of Caution: Anyone trying to sell you something will always offer you the Rolls Royce version first, remember they always offer a VW package as well, just have to beat it out of them. I have never been hired by a company that accepted my CDL and didn't give a road test . I doubt these companies would give a road test if it wasn't required .

| Can't speak to your past experiences with your past employers, some employers exceed minimum requirements in some safety related areas. Under 391.33 Equivalent of road test: a) in place of, and as equivalent to, the road test required by 391.31, a person who seeks to drive a commercial motor vehicle may present, and a motor carrier may accept - (1) a valid CDL as defined in 383.5 of this subchapter, but not including double/triple trailer or tank vehicle endorsements, which has been issued to him / her to operate specific categories of commercial motor vehicles and which, under the laws of that State, licenses him / her after successful completion of a road test in a comercial motor vehicle of the type the motor carrier intends to assign to him / her; or (2) A copy of a valid certificate of drivers road test issued to him / her pursuant to 391.31 within the preceeding three years. (b) if a driver presents, and a motor carrier accepts, a license or certificate as equivalent to the road test, the motor carrier shall retain a legible copy of the license or certificate in its files as part of the DQ file. (c) A motor carrier may require any person who presents a license or certificate as equivalent to the road test to take a road test or any other test of his / her driving skill as a condition to his / her employment as a driver.
