I have never driven a diesel and I am thinking about purchasing a 2005 one ton dually with a 410 rear end, manual 6 speed transmission to pull a 8000 lb gooseneck trailer with 4400 lbs of horses and a vis-a-vis carriage. I have never driven a diesel and I am thinking about purchasing a one ton dually with a 410 rear end, manual 6 speed transmission to pull a 8000 lb gooseneck trailer with 4400 lbs of horses and a vis-a-vis carriage.   (I bought a ¾ ton and my mechanic says sell that Dodge and get a bigger truck or you will be replacing that transmission too often to make it practical. It is for sale! I have learned to listen to his wisdom.)  But back to my question, there is no posting of gas mileage.  Can anyone give me an idea of what I will expect in town and on the road pulling my load?  I have also heard that it is hard to get parts for the manual transmissions.  Do you have any comments on that issue?  Thank you for help in me determining my purchase? atlhdc

Well I just bought a 2006 Ford 350 with  a 4:30 rear end. I believe the Dodge will give you better milage. I loaded a 9000 # dump trailer on to my fladbed & hauled it from Co. to Or. & got only 9.5 MPG. My trailer weighs about 5500 #. I bought the Ford because I got a really good deal. My 3/4 ton had 3:70 but I would not have wanted to pull that much weight with it.

The overdrive ratio (high gear) differs between a manual versus and auto, even within the same manufacturer. Technically your best mpg happens where your peak torque and horsepower cross each other on a graph, in reality there is also the factor of speed. My Dodge/04/Cumm/6sp/3.73/265-70-R17 turn 1900 at 65, my graph shows 1900 to 2000 should be the peak for me, and I can attest to it. If I run 2100 at 70 I will go from 21 hwy to 16, newer electronic engine are pickey about their "sweet spot"

Speed is another factor, are you running 55 or 75? Gear for 55 and you will have to many rpm at 75 and eat fuel, gear for 75 and run 55 you will lug the engine all day long and eat main bearings sooner or later. Ford's and Chevies I am told like the 1900 to 2100 at cruise, and Mopar likes 1900 to 2000. Beyond rear and trans, their is also the tire size than make a 300 rpm difference.

Try out what your looking for, low gears pull better, but only give better mpg if you go slower, high gears give better mpg, but will not pull as good at a slower speed and cause you to lug.

As far as manuals and parts? Never heard of that, there is a lot of them on the road and lots of parts for them. Auto vs Manual? Personal preference, me I will not tow with an automatic, but one of my O/O will not tow with a manual, and we are both former 18 wheel jockies, so professional opinions vary, just make sure the auto has a very large cooler, shift kit, and a temp gauge.

I have a Ford 1 ton dually with a 7.3 Powerstroke with 4.10 rear end.  At 65 (2100 rpm) empty I get 17-18, pulling 10-12.  If you push over 65, you can count on losing 2 mpg.

My buddy has a 3/4 ton Dodge Cummins.  At 65 he gets 22-26 empty, 12-14 loaded.  But, you need to be careful on the weight you're pulling with the 3/4 ton.
