As Don Said, the best way to calculate the mileage is to top the tank off, run it down to below 1/4(more miles the better), then devide miles by gallons.  It is critical to fill tank up to same level to get the most accurate reading.  I'm sure you know all this.

I used figure fuel mileage with every tank when I ran the F350.  It got 8mpg loaded w/ 15,000 to 18,000lb trailer @70mph.  I also have a F250 w/ 7.3L That gets 16/17mpg around town, empty and 19mpg out on hwy, empty.  The last load I pulled with it was an enclosed car trailer that weighed about 15,000. At 70mph it got 13mpg.

I believe your Dodge w/ Cummins should/could do better than that. A loss of boost due to a leak will cause mileage to suffer.  Fuel filter/air filter clean?  Tire pressure good?  How many miles on truck?  Injectors all good?  Wind drag on your load?   There are so many factors that could cause a decrease but 5-6mpg leads me to believe that something is wrong.  You may want a mechanic to hook up the diagnostic computer to it.

I have had Fords all my life, just sold an 02 F-250 7.3 and bought a new Dodge Megacab with the 6.7 Cummins. The engine and trans. combined with the eng. brake are great for hauling. When I was driving home from the dealership it was showing 19-20 mpg!

Also, its the quietest truck Ive ever had, no problems yet but only have 3k miles on it.

I have an 04 Dodge Ram 50K miles 4x4 3500 Dually.

With a combined load of 23K lbs i get 6.5 miles / gal to 9.5 miles / gal. Usually the lowe m/g is on steep upward terrain and wind factor.

This is my 1st truck and i have a manual trans, and I believe I got me a good deal.

I use it to haul cars on a 50 feet wedge trailer.

Hope this will work. see my pictures too on my profile here.

Try larger injectors. I had larger injectors installed in my 05 and 06. I get better mileage loaded and unloaded (4-7mpg).

Compliant because I have to be

Don

u suggested i cell the truck becoz of the mpg i assume.wat will be the around near good figure for mpg. it hasnt been twicked with all factory settings, i assume.

on another note wy i might now considering selling the truck.i have been pumping money to run this venture. i bet i got into it a the wrong time, ...fuel costs.

however on an unrelated note, this is the 2nd time it has done this, i have had uncontrollable vibrations from the front axle. they are hard to control that i have to force break it and then everything normalises. i am not sure if u can help pliz anyone i would appreciate the trouble shooting. the steering wheel will harder to cotnrol cozed by this sudden vibrations coming from the front axle.

last time my drivetrain rear axle broke after such vibrations and i am afraid it culd be the front axle now.

Any help pliz.

Take it to a good shop that you trust, and that works on front ends.  4 wheel drive Dodges are not the best for their front ends, especially when they are used like yours is.

You can still make money, even with the high cost of fuel.  Take a look at how you are doing business.  You can only try to crack open a nut the same way so many times without sucess, before you need to find a different way to do it.  In my opinion, the best way to make money with your set up, is working within 300 miles of your home area.  Anyway, good luck, hopefully nothing major is wrong with your truck.

I don't know what a good MPG is (or should be) for the Cummins in the 3500s..... I've always run Duramax in the 1 tons.  My normal mpg loaded, east of the Mississippi is around 11.5 mpg and out west it would still be above 10 mpg.  Around home I get as high as 19.5 mpg with nothing behind me, but that's at around 50-55 here on the local highways.  I try to run the posted speed limit so in the western states my fuel mileage dimishes accordingly with the higher speed limits and bigger hills....especially in Colorado, Montana and Wyoming areas.......and I cheat a little more out there where I'll usually run about 5-9 mph over the posted limits.  I always thought the Cummins was more fuel efficient, but from what you guys are posting recently, that may not be the case.  When you're getting down in the 6-7 mpg range on these little diesels, you're down there with the big guys running Class 8s.  And that ain't good!

My Dodge has  always done pretty well.  My averages are right there with yours Don.  Although it will usually get in the 20's for mpg when not hooked to anything.  My truck even has the 4:10 rear end.  If I were Alphastock, I would take that truck to the dealer, or a good diesel shop, and try to see if there is something wrong.

I agree with you Sean....there must be a problem with that truck if it consistently gets MPGs down in the 6-7-8 range.  I also wonder exactly how he's checking it.  If he's using the odometer for part of the equation, the speedometer could be off.  I don't recall whether he ever said he had the original rear end ratio or if he'd changed tires, gears, or anything like that.  He needs to get it to a good truck shop and get it checked out.  sumpun ain't rite.....
