Why doesnt USHIP enforce the rules requiring carriers be legal to transport loads? I get red flagged because I am sick of being outbid by carriers that dont have DOT#s, insurance, etc. Hey USHIP guys! What do you expect us to do? Ignore the carriers that are obviously violating your "legal" rules while they bid WAY under the shippers "max price"? I gues if you dont play by the legal carrier rules, you can afford to haul for nothing. These guys are hurting the sites reputation.

Has it changed for the better...or just different?

I've not been on the site for a while but noticed 1 big change here...search options. Why do I need a tracking device tied to me ?? The freedom we have now is slowly slipping away and if we let everyone that comes down the pike track our every movement freedom will completely disappear . A lot of us have fought for freedom..... a lot are fighting and dying as we speak and yet we set back and let the Government and multimillion dollar company's chip away at our freedom every day. Drivers are running all over this country wearing out their $ 40,000.00 plus truck for .50 per mile or even less .....not enough money to be tracked . uShip has programmed shippers to hold out for the guy who will haul for nothing........and it works....uShip is getting richer by the min. while the people who make uShip their money are out there sleeping in their trucks, eating snacks from vending machines and trying to get by . I was wondering if that is as small as a person can go and make a living at this?Any and all advice is welcome and thanks in advance for any advice given. Also any tips on what is best for trailer types, whether it's better to rent or buy one,or anything else any one can think of will be nice, thanks again.

Goats and a boat!

Shipper looking for cheap price to haul a boat 1500 miles so a TSP writes:

"Question: Hi there wavetamer, I can do this for you for around $800.00 right away if you want… the only thing is I need to stop in Virginia to pick up a pair of goats to drop off to a guy who breeds meat goats in Homestead on the way through… they would need to ride in the back of your boat(Tied up of course). There are many things that you should understand especially when it comes to the LTL (Less Than Truckload) market. Being the owner and operator of a 1 truck trucking company I truly know the costs involved and the amount I need to make to stay profitable and allow for future business growth. What follows is my insight to how I do LTL pricing.

1. Weigt and Dimensions.

 a. I break my truck down based on the maximum space and weight I will carry based on floor space not volume space, so the height of a product plays no role in my pricing. The most freight I will carry is 40,000 LBS and 48'. This allows me to not have to put it together like a jigsaw puzzle to maintain legal axle weights.

 b. Based on those dimensions I now have my basis for pricing by the foot.

2. Market price

 a. Now I look at what the average truckload price is for freight. Let's say the average truckload is shipping for $1.60. Doing LTL has always demanded a premium based on the extra time involved with multiple pickups and drops so I put a roughly 40% premium on LTL. Thus in this example my target would be $2.24 per mile for all the freight in my truck totalled.

 b. Simply put 48' divided by $2.24 per mile = 0.047 cents per foot of length taken up

3. Variances

 a. At 40,000 Lbs and 48' my weight for foot needs to be maximum 833 lbs per foot, if the freight takes up more weight then obviously I will have to spread the freight out further so that I maintain legal axle weights.

 b. Ex. You want to ship an object that weighs 4000 lbs and takes up 4 feet of length and the full width of the trailer. Based on my pricing for foot the mormal rate would be .19 cents per mile, but since you are taking up more than the normal rate of weight by close to 1 foot then I would have to charge you for 5' instead of 4' making your price .24 cents per mile.

 c. And finally people need to understand that I have to make this price to stay in business, I can't haul for a loss or I will go out of business. So if you are in a remote area and you want to ship LTL you are probably better off calling Fed-ex or someone of that nature because most trucking companies are going to charge you their full trailer LTL price based on the fact that nothing else is available to put with your freight to offer you a competitive price, however Fed-ex and the likes often practice the same pricing theory so you just have to understand that the market works that way.

I hope this post will give those with little knowledge of pricing a good insight into LTL pricing and let them in the future be a little more reasonable of their price to ship expectations.

prices

how can a new guy get his foot in the door when these guys on here bid on a load that a legit business cant even match they dont even realize what there doing i know everyone need to make a buck but why not keep it competitive

DL#s FYI.

Idenity theft is the largest growing crime in the US as we speak. Especially if your a legitimate business, its not hard to find out your name and address and they already have your DL#..........POOF....Your good name and credit goes down the tubes. The only people you need to give your DL# to are law enforcement and your current insurance company. If a customer asks for it give it to them over the phone or in person. I see so many profiles on here where people list their DL# and in some instances their name right along with it. Do yourselves a favor and remove that tidbit of information from your public profile or you may the next one who gets credited with buying a new boat or truck for someone else.

Are there Laws on how long, and weight, etc ?

What is required ( if anything ) to haul my own stuff.

My pickup Truck pulling a 40ft. The trainer/owner would then say "DO NOT take this horse off the trailer for ANY reason. Have a safe trip we'll see you again soon".

Maybe its because I have box stalls. Maybe its because I dont drive like a maniac and all my horses get dropped off relaxed and well cared for... maybe.... I dont know.

So Im idly reading other TSPs profiles-- and all of them spout the same thing "we stop every three hours and take the horses off the trailer to stretch their legs"

As a horse owner (I have 9) Im thinking "like HELL you'll unload my horse at a truck stop or on the side of the highway!!!! Get him here NOW"

I agree with stopping overnight and unloading at a stable (I have many times). I agree with stopping the trailer for 15-30 minutes every three to four hours to check water, hay, and yes, to let the horses rest. But taking a shippers cargo (who Ive only handled once) OFF the trailer and taking that kind of liability? Uhm. No.

Im wondering if every three hours these TSPs find safe, suitable stables to offload the animals (oh, and have enough hands on deck to hold every animal, because it isnt safe to tie someones horse to a trailer) or if they offload at a truck stop, or the side of the highway, or AT ALL!?!?!

Im thinking its a load of BS. I have run into MANY of other service providers at Truck Stops ("Hey! Are you __________?" " Why Yes! I am!" "Nice to meet you" blah blah blah) and not once have I seen one offload a horse (check on them, yes, go into the trailer, yes, clean out stalls, yes-- offload a customer's horse---- no).

As a shipper, I would be incredibly wary of TSPs offering to offload a horse every 3 hours. I would also be wary of someone who offers to drive 2 hours then stop for 1-- to me, that sounds like an excuse to buy more time so as to take the "round about" way without the shippers consent.

This is more my opinion from a horse owners prospective rather than a fellow hauler. If there IS someone who actually takes the horses off every three hours... how do you do it? How can you absolutely insure that animal once it leaves the safety of your trailer? Why are you willing to take that risk?

Road tolls from fl to maine, what could they amount to?

How much would tolls be from fl to maine or ny be on avg. I’m really nervous about moving my beautiful piano, so does anyone know any excellent household moving services that specialize in this type of thing? I need them to be respectful of how important my piano is to me.

Favorite Quote:

“Anxiety is love's greatest killer. It’s called an ad valorem tax, and it’s a property tax used by Kansas, Arkansas and Kentucky.

What a boneheaded “property” tax. It doesn’t matter if you don’t own property in any of these states. If you have registered a vehicle through the apportioned registration in these states, that’s what matters.

You say, “Wait a minute, I registered in Georgia.” Well, through that registration, you have listed these states on your application. Therefore, you’ve registered your vehicle in these states. And they want you to pay for miles run inside their borders. You don’t even have to do any business or buy any fuel or even stop to pee in these states, but if you drive through, they’ve got you.

If you roll through those states in your truck you will be assessed the ad valorem tax, based on miles you ran through the state in the previous year. They use the depreciated value of your equipment – even your leased equipment – and a percentage of jurisdictional miles from your total fleet miles to determine what the tax is going to be.

A question I hear a lot here at OOIDA is: Why should truckers pay an ad valorem tax to those states? Don’t truckers already pay to run the interstate system?

The answer of course is, yes, trucks already pay plenty to run through these states. Small-business truckers pay through UCR, the IRP, and the IFTA. So the crazy question remains, why do they have to pay to roll through these three states? You are not doing business, not delivering, not picking up. The crazy answer is that you’ve registered your vehicle in this state, and you’ve traveled miles there.

The assessment forms come out in January and February and are due back by the end of March. Look for the actual bill in November.

Even if you ran zero miles in one or more of these three states, no matter, the state will still find your name through the state registration system and send the assessment (they call it a rendition).

And if you ran zero miles there, don’t just think you can drop the assessment in File 13. You must put “zero” and send the form back to the state or, bam, you get billed for the maximum that state’s legislation allows.

Kansas will promptly tag you for $100. If they have reason to believe you have five trucks, it’s $500 bucks. When you get that bill, you have 15 days to protest. Kansas will reevaluate at that point and send you a new bill.

Kentucky no longer sends out an assessment or a bill, but has added a tax on the IRP registration. So it will hit you with the ad valorem tax at time of registration.

Why has no one succeeded in getting this killed via the court system? The reason is probably that when taxes are based on miles traveled in a state, it’s not as clear that they are discriminatory.

Can’t OOIDA make some kind of legal challenge?

That’s not on OOIDA’s radar screen right now. The Association has looked at it in the past, and the opportunity to win was not clear. OOIDA President and CEO Jim Johnston told me about a year ago that does not mean the Association won’t look at it again in the future. If the fee becomes excessive and more states find this a great idea, he told me, revisiting the idea of a legal action is not totally out of the question.

Posted by Sandi Soendker at 2:25 PM

Labels: sandi soendker

boat transport

I have a customer that asked about shipping a 30'x9.5'x 10k boat from florida to tx, and I wanted to know what if any permits I might need, Thanks. Their logic? Why share their profits with Placer County and the state if they “do all the work”?

The police department even conducted a three-month pilot program this past summer using truck drivers as their test subjects for violations such as restricted routes, load and license issues in order to gauge whether their new revenue enhancement strategy would be profitable.

The overwhelming response to their initial experiment was positive. And now Roseville has the cash in hand as proof.

Roseville – award-winning small city that it is – can’t pass along any more tax increases, it seems, to its own residents. So, instead, they are looking to prey on nonvoters and nonresidents, such as long-haul truckers.

Roseville Police Capt. Stan Lumsden even threw a little flattery truckers’ way in a Sacramento Bee article. He stated that drivers tend to pay their fines sooner and are less likely to contest the municipal code tickets than state code citations, which is another “benefit” to using the city code instead.

I’m sure that Capt. Lumsden’s shout-out to truckers will not give them a warm and fuzzy feeling, knowing they hit the “Roseville Favorite Violators” list because they are good payers.

Lumsden even bragged that those ticketed shouldn’t complain because of what a good deal it is. The municipal tickets will be offered at bargain prices because they will be cheaper than state-issued tickets. That’s because Roseville doesn’t have to divvy up the profits with county and state. Instead of having a $146 ticket and the city getting a measly $31 of it, Roseville can offer a discounted fine of $100. It’s cheaper for the perp and Roseville gets to keep it all.

However, Lumsden did want to make it clear that

the police department’s main objective is, of course, safety – not generating revenue. What is going on here? Why are some members allowed to flag everything they want for no cause without any recourse to them? Seems like a huge waste of time for the Uship employees. Is it some rule violation to use the words "noncompliant" or "not legal"? I dont get it. Im sure this will be flagged soon.
