The guy's that used to run mechanical engines know what I mean. I have researched fuel economy, compared mechanical vs. electronic, and have not seen an advantage in that area. What do you do when the fuel shuts off on a electronic truck, can you fix it with 2 feet of twine within 5 minutes?

chevy c60 366 tall deck

Is a chevy c60 2 ton hotshot truck a decent truck to tow with. I am in need of an enclosed trailer 5x8 up to 6x10. I have a so called 5x8 and I was woundering if I could make a slide in box for the trailer. I have found a few things online talking about it. The roof of it had me worried and I realized I had a hard tonneau cover that might work for a roof. The size is perfect for the trailer. How would I attach sidewalls to the trailer and then attach the cover for the roof? or would it be better to make a wood roof? Trailer is believed to be rated at 3500# it was made around '91 or'92 area.

The pics below are what i have.

3 car hauling

Hi, I just bought a 2006 ford powerstroke v-8 dully and a 1988 starlite 3 axle car hauler which is a little heavier then i thought about 9500 pounds empty and it has a very strong winch on it. I'm 28 and have driven long haul for 3 years accident free, very good with people and I have a family that is very tight, I'm not afraid of hard work or working in general. However I'm very nervous about getting out on the road not ever hauling cars and of course now I don't have a sleeper so I no hotels are going to take a good amount of extra money. The question I guess is Who is gonna give me the shot I deserve to haul there cars? also I added a extra 100 gallon fuel tank to the truck that is connected to my fuel tank is this gonna be a problem with dot? what kinda fuel mileage should i expect? and what kinda money and home time should i expect? Can anybody take me under there wing and give me some pointers to an up and coming green horn?

The missouri kid Thanks! Thanks again you guys.

Being a 35+ year HD rider (have two in my garage as we speak////type??) I have more expierence than I care to admit to hauling bikes in the back of my truck. Back in the day thats why they were cheap..because if you bought one you had to buy a truck too. And if your and older HD rider out there you know this to be true.

After hitting forty yrs old I joined the ranks of those who haul it somewhere, ride for the weekend or event, and haul it home.

Bought my old truck in 93, except for a few trips to the lumber yard it only hauls our bikes. It has a pinch over 200,000 on it now so you can see we've hauled motorcycles a mile or two. This is not the truck I wil use to haul by the way. I Have a 2008 with just 5K on it is for that.

I got my first job (not off here yet) and its a high dollar vintage sled a friend of a friend bought and needs moved. I'll build a custom crate for this one on top of everything else. I always use six point tie down with six ratchet straps. Straps are connected to sheepskin lined canvas loops so never metal touching metal. I Then cover wih a form fitting sheepskin lined cover that my wife made. She put slots for the straps to go through so it fits tight to the bike. I also put it inside the custom top on my long bed truck. Dont like trailers and wont be using one here.

Glad to be a part of what looks to be a typical dysfunctional trucking family.

I'm always looking for something better. What do you motorcycle haulers out there use. Is there a better moustrap? I have submitted company registrations for LLC formation today. I was wary about the calls I got the very next morning after the DOT approval, but about an hr ago I have applied online for $30 for a BOC 3.

I am left with insurance. Now on this issue, if i get full coverage commecial truck insurance, will this be sufficient for the cars I want to haul. What rates do you think I might get? just a rough estimate please.

I went to Big Tex today and they want to sell me a trailer brand new for $16K. I adamantly rejected the price from this salesman. I checked on Ebay and there is one i believe i might get if lucky on the bidding. i havent started bidding on it though. If you may help me with the pounds limitations. I do not intend to go over the DOT 26K to avoid the CDL deal. My Dually is listed as 12K pounds. does it mean the trailer has to be below 14K pounds? how about the factor of the triple axle factor as compared to the dual axle.

The Big Tex salesman said if i get a triple axle i will always change the middle axle every 6 months or yearly coz they get busted easily. he sighted that wen turning the middle is dragged so damages the axle. Any input on his theory please?

finally, what route do u think is the best. i am based in Dallas TX, and want to try the TX, NM, CO, NV, OR up to WA state. do you think its a good one? the milage is like about 1500 from say DFW in TX to Seattle WA.

I am sorry i have raised so many issues all at once, but I really appreciate all the previous posts by yourselve kind people. trust me they helped me a lot, and i think buying the cars 1st was a good deal for me since i cant chicken out now. Wen i did my calculations with that route I noted above, assuming a $800 per car from TX to WA, or any pick and drop along the way, by the 3 cars, to and fro thats like $4.8K. If i manage to do that twice a week thats like $9K and in a month thats $18K. Is that a true calculation for gross income, and now how much u think the costs will be, just a whole rough estimate please.

Thank you for your response in advance, and hope to meet along the trail.

Kay-K

Alphastock Auto Haulers LLC

TX DOT 1738825

MC 636834

Lease Offers???

Hello everyone, I am sure many have been reading the posts of 10,001 pounds and under. I finally got home and called the guy at FMCSA who told me I needed nothing. However, he has a wife and kids also so I am only looking to fix the problem now. I have since gotten MANY different answers. I have printed the paperwork and walked through it with FMCSA so I should have the details correct finally.

I have the OP-1 on my desk. I need $300k liability for under 10,001 GVW. I am allowed to select the second box of section IV for my safety certification which means that I am exempt from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations but must operate in a generally safe manner. ( I assume that means folllow them anyway) I don't need a DOT# but do need an operating authority. This cost for Property and Household goods is $600. I would then have to contact the states I will traverse through to see what additional requirements they might have.

I am getting ready to send this in but would be curious if anyone has a sub contracting offer. I saw the one be vehiclevalet but the Jeep would not pull cars so I am not sure that is a good option. If I got a descent price to avoid the paperwork and spread the investment out, I would seriously consider the offer. Please let me know.

4500 and 5500 size trucks

How much weight can I put behind a very well built 4500 or 5500 series Dodge, Ford, or GMC series truck? There was a lot of grease in there but they just called me today and said that the other side bearing was totally rusted like it was sitting in water. Then they went to repack the rear bearings and said the same thing about that. The local trailer shops say to grease axles about once a year, twice if you do a lot of driving. The manufacture of the trailer says every 300 to 500 miles. I have never heard that before. Any thoughts?

GM truck problems

I switched from Dodge to GMC due to transmission problems with both the automatic (4 spd) and the manual too.

Now that I have a truck that uses rice oil but a good automatic transmission I seem to have a new problem.

The "Theft Deterent System" keeps locking out the ignitioin system and the truck won't start. It has happened three times in as many weeks but twice on this trip to the west coast.

There is no way you can reset the system and the truck has to be towed into a dealership and GM roadside assistance won't tow your trailer with the truck and because it's a 4X4 they want it on a flatbed because the transfer case does not have a netural position or drop the driveshaft.

I have found one easy to deal with GM dealer (Chevrolet) in Winslow AZ who reset the computer and had me on the road in the blink of an eye. I get to Las Vegas after my delivery in Reno and as soon as I locked the truck it acted flakey and then I went to start it and nothing again.

So I call GM and they have it towed to Desert Buick, Pontiac, GMC on W Sahara and I get to sit for the weekend. That might not be so bad except no rental car from GM.

I have spent lots of time looking for GM Customer Service on line and it seems to be a non existant department @ GM. At least Chrysler always bent over backwards to be helpful when you brake down.

If you have had ongoing problems or if your problem has been resolved please let me know so I can learn from your experiences.

Contact me JBPulls4U on U Ship Stay Safe Stay Legal Wear your seat belt and drive 68

24' International DT466 with Sleeper For Sale

I assume it is ok to list my truck for sale here. I dont use it much anymore and would like to sell it. It is a 2000 International DT466E with a sleeper cab and a 24' box. Newer steer tires. Runs Excellent. Has about 213K (aprox). Needs some running lights replaced. Also there is a small hole in the roof by the rear rollup door. I can have this repaired or credit the cost to repair. I just dont have time to work on this truck. AC also does not work. I put a few thousand dollars into it 2 years ago or so when I first bought it. I used it to transport my own auction equipment back home. It is a 25500 GVWR so no CDL is needed. I had it registered as "Not for Hire".

I am not sure how to post pictures and the rules say I cant leave contact info. Which one would you buy Again?

I'm looking for a new GPS. My first Magellan was stolen out of my truck earlier in the year then I went to the first strip mall looking for a store that may have something. Found a Radio Shack with about 6+ on display but only 2 in stock. Bought the better of the 2. After using it for over 6 months it wasn't as good as the first one I bought. This one is a Mio C320. It has taken me on two roads that I shouldn't have been on and also when in town it want's to take me 20 minutes out of the way to get home. Since I'm getting a new truck I thought I'd get a better GPS. A friend told me last night he has one for his laptop (not MS) and it's been great. He said he like it better than the one in the truck he was driving. I like the idea of a box truck for weather sensitive items and small atvs. I also like the idea of a 5th wheel for versatility, I could run a box trailer, flatbed, car wedge, and pull towables. For me it sounds like the 5th wheel has the most potential to make money with its versatility. But when you way in the cost of trailers and a good 1 ton compared to a 16' box truck, it makes it hard for me to decide. So I guess my question is which truck has the greater potential to make a profit over cost? What style of trailer do you find has more demand in this business, car, flat or box? Any advice on truck options for some one looking to enter the transport business as a small two man operation would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

DOT approved HOT SHOT SLEEPERS - CHECK THESE OUT

I came across a company in <?xml:namespace prefix = st1 ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags" />Vancouver WA that is making DOT approved sleepers for HotShots. International bought GM's medium truck division . Bad part about that is the most liked feature of the 4500/5500 was the Duramax engine . You know it won't take long for that engine to be replaced with the 6.4 Ford is buying from International . The trucks may still carry the Chevy name though . Some of you may remember when GMC sold their heavy truck division to White . Then the trucks were White GMC (and later Volvo White GMC)
A lot happening at Nissan with trucks but details are sketchy . Nissan is stopping production of minivans at it's MS plant and use that plant to produce a new line of Cummins powered commercial trucks they will only describe as "under 8 tons " . Then Nissan also announces a deal with Chrysler to produce a Nissan version of the Dodge Ram . (Like the arrangement Chrysler has with Mitsubishi making a version of the Dakota that is sold as th Raider )
I can't figure this Chrysler/Nissan deal , especially with Nissan coming up with a new Cummins powered truck . But the good news is Chrysler will use it's U.S. plants for production of the Nissan trucks . The latest Chrysler UAW contract stipulated the contract is only valid with current model lines . Would the new truck be considered a new model line not subject to the contract ?
