Anyways, holy crap, 2.20 cost to operate. Thats nuts. My operating costs is roughly 60 cpm now. I cant take the big loads and make the big bucks but i can avg 1.50 to 2.25 per mile. Thats all miles driven, not just a trip from point a to point be like most others on this site call it. I just dont understand most of these carriers on the site. They drive the rates down so much and make no profit. The carriers think the are making profit but in the end a true carrier who knows biz is 50 to 1.00 per mile is your operating cost. some people are just cluless and digging themselves a grave.

The first guy with cost close to $2.20/ mile is a lot more realistic then you with your $1.10 it's guys like you I wish would go under so the true professional can haul the freight at a descent price for both customer and trucking company. Being a US based company you probably can run cheap because it's unbelievable what the Americans will or can operate at. This site has the most ridiculous rates and bids I've ever seen in my 30 plus years in the trucking industry, the last 12 as my own company. Smarten up people get the rates up.

Jag,I think we have met.Thomas Duncan here,I have been up and I have been way down.Using this site is beneficial for you business in that it is putting you out there worldwide,I have hauled for Saudi's,Australins,Africans,ect from this site sometimes not even meeting them because of my reputation.One thing I have learned when you try to open a truckers eyes to his actual operating costs(fixed and variable )they will sometimes actually get angry when they hear it.They, like I have in the past, tend to lie to themselves to justify the mentality that as long as I am moving I am still in there.In this business your profit ,I said profit, per mile needs to be 1.75 and up to survive!!!!That is a fact if you are keeping all the requirements and you are maintaning the proper equipment..Good loads come from people who have had bad experiences with people who either do not know the business or just do not care.They come and go.It does not do any good to take a 8.00/mile load if you spend 7.00/mile moving it.Good luck and try to do as I do,I do not even consider what someone else will do it for.I know what I have to have and it is not always constant.I do not see myself as competeing with anyone.Uship like any one else can not effectively monitor all involved for compliance and experience,no one can.It is basicly the customers responsability to check this out.And realize this,some customers are better off avoided also.Ther got it off my chest,good luck...tduncan55

I have booked some very decent larger loads here,the smaller ones are being scooped at a no profit rate.One real benefit of the site is the worldwide contact with others and getting your name out there.It is very expensive to do this w/o this site.I deal with people overseas as far as Saudi Arabia,Australia ect.....that I have made contact with here from hauling thru uship.It is just business and sometimes you just have to accept some of the less attractive parts of it.You always have the option to not book cheaper stuff that doesn't suit your needs at the time.Just some more positive input...

You may be better to seek David's (hawgtrax) or the other Jack's (indian) insight on some deals. With me being tied up with this sweet gig I got right now I have been somewhat out of the loop on hearing about bikes for sale.

I would think it would be difficult to make a profit hauling the small boats on here with a Pete. Most boats on here only require an F250 or equivalant averaging 12 or more mpg. I only haul up to 32' on my trailer and usually get 2 to 2.50 per foot. What I get here only takes me home, if that. The larger boats seem to be getting closer to 4.00 or so per foot. As far as permits go, that usually seperates the illegals from us legal guys, most states require a USDOT number and insurance before issuing a permit. I use blanket permits for the southern states but good ole Jersey and Delaware want your money every time you haul an oversized load.

No problem, I don't really deal with boats and I realized REAL FAST that for what I do there wasn't really anything on this site for me! So I rarely ever even do a load search anymore unless I am trying to help somebody out... I do pure Hot-Shot so for me to find another load to go with or come back I have to find it book it and load it FAST! That doesn't happen on here! You have already met a really great group of guys who are working together with others and certain others to help bring rates up in various ways and in ALL markets. You being a BIG boat transporter I'm sure that you have a unique view that many of us probably don't!
You ever get down Texas way, give me a shout! We'll get a cup of coffee (or something stronger depending on both our schedules!)

No offence was taken on any level. I'm sorry if I seemed a little rude it wasnt meant that way either. I book loads daily that pay 4.50 per mile or better. but not on this site. there has to be a way to bring up the rates. I know that the illegal providers is a big problem. but i dont see how this is going to help on a more immediate level. Please under stand.. a big portion of the boat hauling industry is taken by uship's advertising of up to 80% off. Nearly 1000 boat owners have chossen to use this site. Thats Huge!

Jag, I hope that you didn't take my post offensively in any way, it certainly was not meant that way!
If you are carrying $1mil in CARGO then yeah, your insurance is definitely a bigger expense then mine! And I am sure that you are certainly more than capable of doing your own CPM calculations. My number also does not have any permits calculated into it as I do not consider that bart of my base operating cost and I charge that separately. (I don't run oversize requiring a permit very often). For base maintenance (Tires, PM's, etc) I calculate about $0.30/mi and for Ins and Pmnt I calculate about $0.20/mi (Based on $2k/mo and 2500 mi/wk) then add your fuel (in your case $1/mi I'm not paying $5/gal and I'm getting 6-7mpg outta the big trucks and 8.5 outta mine and 10-17 outta the little trucks...) and you are at $1.50/mile BASE operating cost. Add another $0.36/mi for driver and for $1.86 you break even. Thats where my math came from...

Thanks for your reply. I'm sure i'm beating a dead horse with this topic.. However I think the more we bit** the faster we can fix these issues. I dont use this site for my primary work load, hell I havent been able to book the first load out of 100 plus bids. On another note... as a bike transporter.. do you ever run across deals on bikes for sale? I'm looking for a couple of specific makes and models.

Your key word there is legally. Most here do things illegally. Thats how they can do it for less. Add to that the fact uship boasts "save up to 80% on shipping" and you see the legal carriers are already up against the wall. That is why most of us here do not rely on this place for a major portion of our work, and some of us have even quit pulling from here till some issues are addressed.

Thank you for your feedback. I'm checking in to the insurance you spoke about. We do have 1 million dollars of cargo insurance. I dont know why it would show up that way. However.. I dont understand 1.50 per mile cost. when fuel is 5.00 per gallon, this pete gets 5 mi to the gallon. that is 1.00 per mile in its own. you factor in tires, shocks, maint, repairs, ins. @ 15,000. per year, and authority. what do you come up with? Don't get me wrong. there are smaller loads that shouldnt pay as well as larger ones. However.. if the load is oversize by any margin, the permits cost the same unless its a superload. so how can these transporters leagally move a load under cost.?

Ok... I'm contacting you... Is it an additional charge to have my item fully insured? Or is it already insured up to $1million? Are you sure that that $1m is your cargo insurance? Or is that your BIPD? By the way, Safersys shows that you only have $750,000 BIPD. You got something wrong somewhere, you might want to check into it.

And another thing that is throwing me a little bit is the $2.20/mile operating cost. That seems a little bit high. How much fuel does that Pete drink? I understand that everybody's cost is a little different and I'm certainly not going to dispute that the rates on this site are extremely low (you'll figure out real quick why that is...) but I'd venture to say that most are operating at about $1.10-1.50/mi for fuel, maintenance, insurance, and payment. (and, yes that goes for big trucks too... I just got out of a Pete and even though I don't personally own any 'big' trucks anymore, I am still directly involved with operating a few!)

Other than that, Welcome to the forum! I see that you are a 'compliant' carrier so you will meet some really good folks here real soon!

When is this site and its serv. providers going to stop working for free? With an operating cost of 2.20 per mile.. how can anyone move a boat for 2.00 per mile including permits? It seems as if every load I bid someone gets matched for around 1.90 per mile. and then they have to buy permits. does anyone have insurance? Can someone direct me to a site that is dedicated to making a bit of money?
