If you hire a legally authorized carrier to move your boat the carrier will have cargo insurance; this is a requirement to transport boats, freight, or anything else for hire. Just be sure to have the carrier's insurance agent provide you with a certificate proving coverage. Most cargo coverage is in the $50,000 to $100,000 range and will cover your boat. If you accept a bid and the insurance agent cannot provide the certificate, then cancel the transaction immediately as you will not be covered.

Uship, at least until now, has been slow to provide any information on their insurance program.

I hope this helps.

EXPANDING ON TOPHAND'S (JOHN'S) RESPONSE:

ALL Legally registered "CommonCarriers" have to have Cargo and liabilty Insurance IAW the Law. That information can be found on the Government's public database.

http://li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov/LIVIEW/pkg_menu.prc_menu

You use the Carrier's MC or DOT # (found on their profile) and place into the appropraite area within the link. The results will show you if their credentials ie insurance etc is current and their authority active.

[content removed] BUT ask the Carrier through the Q&A section of your listing.

Bottom line is= your boat will be automaticallycovered by the Carrier's Insurance if a Legal Carrier is used.

"Contract Carriers" are Carriers that 99.9% of the time are Carriers that transport for a specific bussiness/person.They will most likely NOT have Cargo Insurance that will cover your property. But then again, there are some Contract Carriers that carry Cargo Insurance. Ask the Carrier for proof after you accept their bid but before they hook up to your boat! The reason for this backwards method is that personal contact infromation CANNOT be exchanged prior to bid acceptance. Therefore the Carrier can't FAX you anything beforehand. Upon receipt of said proof, call the Insurance company to verify if it's anactive policy

!!Protect yourself and your property!!

Did you acquire and VERIFY the validity of your chosen Carrier's FEDERALLY MANDATED DOT & MC #'s as per the UShip User Agreement?

http://www.uship.com/user_agreement.aspx

Note: Did you know that NO active "MC #" = No COMMERCIAL insurance?

OOPS !!!!!!!

INTERSTATE" transport requires an ACTIVE "MC" number! You verify it at the Government's "REAL TIME" web site: http://li-public.fmcsa.dot.gov/LIVIEW/pkg_html.prc_limain

To whoever flagged the above posting, I just simply stated what is already a part of the UShip User Agreement dated Apr 17, 2007.

It has been recently updated!

Check it out! Some of it I copied/posted below to save you some time. I didn't intend to do any harm to anyone, but rather to save the Shipper some money? Maybe at the same time to allow more for them to spend towrds your bid?

uShip does not screen or qualify TSPs for compliance with federal, state or local laws and regulations. It is recommended that you confirm such compliance directly with the TSP before services are rendered by the TSP.

14. Non-household Goods Shipments. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, part of the U.S. Department of Transportation, required that all TSPs handling interstate shipments register with it and provide certain information. You can determine the registration and safety statues of your TSP at www.fmcsa.dot.gov. Certain transportation services may involve movements only within one state. A number of states have statutes and regulations pertaining to such intrastate transportation. We suggest you check with your state Department of Transportation if your service is entirely within one state.

uShip cargo protection is not offered on all shipments, or even on all bids on a particular shipment. Based on our underwriting guidlines, which take into account many factors, if cargo protection is available you will have the details offered to you on the bid page.

Mickey,

That seems kind of strange that insurance wouldn't be offered in conjuction with all bids within a shipment, even though the particular shipment itself may qualify.

Any way that you could expand on this a bit? Maybe post or include the underwriting guidelines somewhere?
