Well, I took the plunge yesterday and bought a NEW 06 Dodge Ram 3500, with the 5.9 Cummins and 6 speed manual trans.  It is the Mega Cab, which is HUGE!!!

It is a short bed, single rear wheel, but it will do what I want it to do quite nicely.  Being a single wheel rear, it has a GVWR of 9900 pounds, so I guess that puts me in the under 10K class.  (JUST KIDDING!!)

With it being a new 06, I got a good deal, $31,500 OUT THE DOOR, with a 100K extended warranty, bumper to bumper.

All I need to do now, is find a trailer, nail down some insurance agents, file some documents with the Feds, spend some more money, and I will be good to go.

Still interested in the 35' Imperial Gooseneck car hauler pictured on my web site?  If so give me a call.

Hi trucker. I had a 99 Ram 3500 5.9 with the 4 spd auto. Dodge put one transmission in it and it never had a trailer on the back of it.

Now I have a 2007 2500 4x4 with the 5.9 and the 4 spd auto. The first transmission went away @ 27000 miles. Dodge fixed it under the warranty. The next thing I did was buy a 3 year 100k mile warranty for $2,025.00. Now with 83,700 on the clock the engine just sheared all the bolts off the torque converter.

I am a huge fan of the Dodge with the 5.9 and I get good to great mileage, depending on what I have on the back of it. With the current load scaled at 17,940 total (7500 truck) I was getting 8.5 to 9.6 towing 70 to 75 mph.

I drove the new engine up in MT a month ago and I was not impressed with the performance of it. He said he was getting decent mileage but not great mileage pulling a 45' gooseneck drop deck.

I bought 2, 2007 3500's from dave smith motors. first i bought a 4x4 dually 5.9 4 sp at big horn for $34.300 with the jake brake and its been a fantastic haul rig. several trips from seattle to LA it shaves 3 hours from the trip because i can do 70 mph up the siskiyous. i test drove a 6.7 6 sp auto laramie and bought it cash on the spot $41.600. my advice / ALWAYS GET THE LARAMIE ITS THE BEST $3500 YOU'LL EVER SPEND!. its a single rear wheel 3500 4x4. buy the 6.7 the power and the gearing of the 6 speed auto is fantastic for hauling. 2 trips seattle to LA towing a 14K trailer with this rig and i can honestly say i'd rather be cummins than strokin! service guys at dave smith said the late model 6 speed manual is problematic ie reverse and 3rd will just quit working due to a design flaw. its an easy fix and they keep the shelves stocked with the repair parts. they had 3 units with less than 20K miles being repaired when i was there. they say the auto is the way to go and it has a higher final drive ratio than the manual and gets better mileage because of that fact. i installed dynatrac free spin front hubs on both rigs and it did add 1.5 mpg exactly. i get aprx 15 mpg empty and 13 towing 14K. i plan to order a 2008 dually mega cab this month and i have a shop adding 2' into the frame so i can install the long box. then i go to kelderman west in riverside ca for a complete air ride suspension costing aprx $12k. btw all my trucks have an underbody 105 gallon steel fuel tank system from aero tanks in corona ca cost aprx $2k but woth its weight in gold!

Bought a 2007 Megacab dually 4x4 with the 6.7 auto/manual auto select and jake brakes. Had it for 8 weeks using it every 3rd trip. Fuel with nothing behind averages around 17.3mpg. Loaded heading to Ca. from Oh with a 9k lb boat averaged 11.9-12.3 mpg., Tx to Co. with a 6k lb travel trailer averaged 12.5mpg, and Co to Ca with a 32' Regal cruiser averaged 10.1mpg. The power is extreme. Your doing 75 mph @ 1600rpms. My 06 with the 5.9 gets better fuel mileage, but the power differece is very noticeable.

That 4x4 is costing ya about 2 mpg over a 4x2...something for some to think about....

Another compliant, OOIDA member!

I know, but its a backup, plus we run cattle and horses, so we need the 4x4. My 06 gets great  mpg. I still enjoy the power with a heavy load of the 6.7 cummin's.

Me too!!!!!  I'd like to know the rear end ratio and tire size.  I didn't know they offered anything like that.
