| FOR COMPENSATION that everybody seems to speed read right past it...I belive someone already pointed it out above under drive away and tow away. Of course DOT officers are not going to stop him but A hwy patrolman might for some other silly reason like tail light out. I need your driver license and registration and insurance papers. Officer this is not my car...It's a stranger that I bid on his listing and I won. And the story escalate from there. Do you have your permits to perform drive away. No officer,I'm just a college kid wanting to see the USA before I settledown on a real job paying me a hell of a lot more. Give me a break dude,Let him do things properly to avoid all that nonsense and tarnish his clean crimal record should the officer takes him in before he gets a hold of the real owners.

Real response:
Sure officer, here's my license and the vehicle registration, along with insurance information and a letter from the owner stating I have permission to have the car. Additionally, here's the owner's phone number.
"Thank you sir, fix that taillight, have a nice day.":

I certainly don't pretend to be an expert on any subject....but below is what FMCSA says about driveaway. In my feeble little mind, it would be a stretch to apply it to someone paying an individual to drive their personal car from point A to point B. And just to give it a personal touch....... I couldn't care less if someone is willing to hand their keys to a stranger along with a handful of $$$$. A friend recently suggested that those on uShip have far more significant issues to ponder than whether a college kid gets paid a hundred bucks to drive someone's car. I have to agree completely.......fire away . Driveaway-towaway operation means an operation in which an empty or unladen motor vehicle with one or more sets of wheels on the surface of the roadway is being transported: (1) Between vehicle manufacturer's facilities; (2) Between a vehicle manufacturer and a dealership or purchaser; (3) Between a dealership, or other entity selling or leasing the vehicle, and a purchaser or lessee; (4) To a motor carrier's terminal or repair facility for the repair of disabling damage (as defined in § 390.5) following a crash; or (5) To a motor carrier's terminal or repair facility for repairs associated with the failure of a vehicle component or system; or (6) By means of a saddle-mount or tow-bar.>> Driver means any person who operates any commercial motor vehicle.>>

Don, Thanks for the info. It seems to be in line with what I remembered. I've been too busy looking at Freightliners to get in the books much.

I think in essence I agree with you, but why would you spend 7 days driving to-from for a lousy 50 maybe 100 bucks?
See it doesn't make sense...
You have to eat and at least take a couple of showers or you'll stink up the car (I'm serious man I've known people who lived in their car a few days and OMG that crap STINKS!). It's bad enough if you sleep in it clean and fresh and that might be all right for one night but I know from experience you can't go but so long without a good night's sleep so now you need a motel room.
Because that's the thing, you can't drive but so many miles at a stretch next thing you know you fall asleep at the wheel of what, someone's 2005 Porsche Cayenne? Lol (except it ain't even remotely funny).
Now there's liability, your insurance company would HAVE to be made aware of what you're doing, you can not simply drive other people's cars nice as can be... This might be all right as a one time deal say between you and your best friend, even then it could get tight if someone wrecks but once strangers and their property get involved it usually turns downright ugly.
So go see what it would cost to get full coverage insurance for you to drive ANY car, ANY time.
That's exactly how I would phrase it to your insurance agent, and if they ask any questions you can explain to them what the deal is, fine.
Then, re-calculate all of your costs based on what I just said and see how much cheaper than the licensed carries you can still do it for and I can almost bet you would be astounded that they're already awful cheap (at least I was).
Don't forget some states have toll roads and some of them cost 10 and 15 dollars a pop

Oh I forgot to mention, before you call your Insurance agent:
"Policy activity CAN (and will) increase premium!"
So yeah, just the fact you call and inquire about this could make your rates go up, even if you decide right during the call that this is not for you.
Because that inquiry could be taken as you seriously considering this, then your calling it off they might see it as "you're going to try it anyhow," just as an example but either way it takes time to deal with your inquiry and this involves labor, hence money, anyhow it's an old saying "let sleeping dogs lie"
