Jack, you should know better... just because fuel goes up doesn't mean we should raise our prices! The estimator takes some average of really cheap bids and spits out a price, that saves you 80% or whatever... it doesn't take any of our expenses into account. I can go without eating or staying in a hotel to take a bike from CA to FL for $300 and make it in 36 hours of straight driving!

Why does it take you so long?

You bring up a great point about the Shipping Price Estimator. The algorythm for relevance that results in the 10 "most comperable" shipments is pretty complex. It takes into account type of goods, weight, overall distance, specific lane/route and recency of match among other factors. These factors have different weights, and the recency of the match is not one of the most important factors - so you may see older shipments in the comps if the other aspects of the shipment are very similar.

Also, all of the data we use for comps is 2006 or newer - so, while gas prices have risen steadily over the last 3 years or so, current prices are not that different from average prices across this timeframe. We do not just show low bids - these are actual shipping prices paid (accepted bids) as opposed to all bids received. As you might expect, average bid prices are significantly higher than the average shipping price - but the tool is designed to show actual transaction prices vs. average bid prices.

We are working on a tool to measure how transportation prices change over time and plan to adjust past shipments for these changes when we use them for the purposes of providing and estimate. Regards, Matt

Matthew, It is clear that Uship tries to steer shippers toward Legal, compliant and Insured shippers but. your estimator is driving them right to the Ilegal carriers, it is the low bids that make up your averages, and the majority of low bids come from Ilegal haulers.. The shippers that come here use your estimator as a guideline, and pay more attention to the bid amount, then the integrity of the carrier.

My question is this, how is all your reasearch into the Legal world of transportation going to do any good here? The only way it will work if you only opened your site to legal carriers, monitored them, that way legal carriers are not competing with people who are not USDOT compliant, who don't have Insurance and don't pay taxes.

Shame on you, Rich... how could uShip possibly verify all the legal carriers with 60,000 on uShip alone?

I agree with all of you, although the shipping estimator gives an average of ACCEPTED bids, they just happen to be the bids that were placed by not-so compliant carriers. So, it helps the shipper, but puts us in a nasty spot. My prices have gone up in the last 3 months, if I was in business in 2006 I'm sure they'd be much higher above that.

My I'm with Jack, get rid of the shipping estimator ALL TOGETHER! If shippers didn't think that they'd get a $0.10/mile price on a shipment, they'd accept higher bids, therefore making us TSP's and uShip more money. The shippers can't expect to get the same "deal" from a compliant carrier that they do with a non-compliant one, especially almost 2 years after the fact.

i have to agree with Elite, first all it does is cause problems i can not believe that feature is kept up with, why can't we do away with it an stop suggesting prices even if they are what some may have shipped for in the past .if everyone on here was on the same rules maybe it would work but things change to fast.just a thought.jack Indian

I agree, that would take some time to accomplish, but that is the difference between companies that do what ever it takes to be the best, and companies that just want to put some coin in the bank.

I don't know about any of you but, I am not just building a company to pay the bills, I am building a company that will provide financial security for myself, my kids and one day, my grandkids, and everything I do from start will have an affect on what this company ultimately becomes, That is where Uship dropped the ball, someone had a brain fart, and ran with it with out planning...And now they are doing the research. DUH..! they are more than likely doing good, but, they could be doing  Great!

I don't do much work here but, it sure is a lot of fun.

I'm with you on that. I'm putting off college (for now) to help my company grow to the point where I can run the business and it can be my career, not just a summer job or any of that weekend warrior what-not. It's too hard to achieve that on uShip, until they bring the price margin up.
