Hi, newbie here. How do I verify the credentials of a potential TSP? Since I'm dealing with live cargo, I want to make extra sure I'm dealing with a safe carrier.
thanks in advance.

super, thank you. Assuming I ask all of these recommended questions (I pasted them below) how do I verify the answers, such as the DOT permits and insurance? Is it appropriate to expect answers to these questions before accepting a bid?
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Questions to ask a horse hauler:
* Do you have mover insurance? What happens if there is an accident?
* Do you have Department of Transportation permits and required licenses as a commercial animal hauler? (It is illegal to ship a horse across state lines without an Interstate Commerce Commission license number).
* What is the schedule for my horse's journey and travel? Will you drive straight through, or will there be a layover in another city?
* How large is the trailer you're using? How many horses will be traveling in the same trailer?
* Who will be looking after my horse during its travel?
* Does the driver have a cell phone?
* What information should I provide for my horse's journey -- health certificates, hay, feed, halter, lead rope, shavings?
* What is your refund/cancellation policy?
* Is there hay and water in front of the horses at all times?

These are all absolutely legitimate questions to ask; if I didn't get the answer I wanted to each of them I'd keep looking for another transporter. It's tough hauling horses, and takes some experience - be sure you find somebody you're comfortable with before you turn them loose.

when asked: Do you have Department of Transportation permits and required licenses as a commercial animal hauler? (It is illegal to ship a horse across state lines without an Interstate Commerce Commission license number).
my TSP replied: under 15,000 pound tags require no commercial license
Is this true? is a commercial license different from an Interstate Commerce Commission License number?
help!

Also, his profile shows a commercial license number (even though he claims he doesn't need one). How can I verify this number?
I'm confused.

| First I have never heard of anything about 15,000lbs tags. And I have been in the transport and trucking industry for almost 20 years. Maybe some others can shed some light on that if there is any to be shed. Also noticed a few things that don't jive. The commercial license you mention is his / her NC drivers license number. Also in the bid details they state $50,000 insurance. In their profile they state full value protection $2,000..... HMMMMMM.... and then in their bio of the profile they state $30,000.....HMMMMM..... to many contradictions for me with just that alone.
