| Very shortly I will be 100% leagal. Right now I have a common carrier application pending. My question is do I need seperate authority to tow other peoples trailers? Or does this tow away/ haul away authority only apply to wreckers?

| I called today and they said that I could haul any trailer I wanted once my authority had cleared. But she also mentioned that I should update my DOT list of what I may haul. I like government less every day.

The BIG question is will your insurance cover it!!!!
Insurance companies will do anything they can to NOT pay out and there are a million stipulations on what you can or cannot do. "Tow-Away" is typically one of the stipulations! Unless you specifically apply for it, and then it is typically EXPENSIVE!

| Anyone up for the "Transport Tag" discussion here. Been trying to get one in Texas. TxDOT says, "A what?" DMV says, "We can get you any of 3 different temporary tags, but they are only good for one vehicle." The local county office says (with puzzled look), "No, I don't think you can get that here." All I want to do is deliver an unregistered trailer from a dealer to a customer. Rick RUN SAFE. RUN LEGAL.

Don't know about Texas, but here (MO) the only way you can get a "transport tag" is as a dealer. You can also get the same old temporary tags for that single trailer or vehicle, but nothing you as a motor carrier can use to place on different trailers. I've been through the whole routine and half the people in the Jeff City License Bureau.

| Thanks, Don. The guy is a good friend, so I think I'll just tell him to let loose with a stack of dealer tags. Rick RUN SAFE. RUN LEGAL.

| In Wisconsin a person can get a Transporter plate, but its use is limited to delivering a trailer from a dealer to the new owner or from a factory to a facility where the trailer can be upgraded or rebuilt. I happen to know some Indiana transporters who used to carry Minnesota Transporter plates.. apparently the Minnesota plate is set up a little different.. and as I recall it cost less. I thought it strange that Minnesota would issue a transporter plate to someone out of state.. but.. they did.

What if the dealer issued a temporary tag to the customer and put it on the trailer ? I guess that would bring up the insurance issue . Possible solution - form an LLC in a state that easily issues transport tags . As far as MN goes , I'm not 100% sure but don't think they accept out of state transport tags and the transport companies give MN tags to drivers routed through MN .

When I was driving Piggy Backs I think our "Transporter" tags were issued in Wisconsin.
Don't know if that helps any...
