I have owned 4 different trucks for the job of transporting. I started with a 1995 Chevy 3500 with 6.5 and an auto trans.. WHAT A PIECE OF CRAP!!!! My car could out pull it..Not joking! Pulled my own boat to the lake with the car instead of that piece of s***. Then I got a 1989 Ford 350 with IDI7.3 The most bullet proof truck I ever owned, I had to rebuild the engine after 819000 miles. and only put in one clutch at about 450000 But you would NEVER win a race up a hill and you better not mind alot!!! of jet black smoke on a hill over 7000 feet. Then I bought a 1990 Ford 350 SRW crew cab LOVE IT, STILL HAVE IT at 487,000 miles.. That proved to be my proven puller! I also bought new in 2005 a ford DRW 350 after it left me on the side of the road the second time....it was sold. It grief was injection and I have heard that is common. I plan on rebuilding my 7.3 and get another 400,000 out of her, but for now, I am driving the BIG truck ( 1997 FREIGHTLINER FLD 120 Conventional ) and that has been fun..I have to say that I have been pleased with the ford line before 2004 and time will tell on the new ones, as for dodge....I have never nor have my friends around home, so I can not say anything about them except for what I have read at that is they have a tranny prob at about 150,000... If that is as bad as it gets I am sure they are a good truck.. PS>>>>....I thought cummins sold there product line to ford for future production. If that is true what is dodge going to do because their early diesels sucked!

Shoot....didn't proof read...

the 1990 truck is a 2000 ford f350 SWR

Sorry for the error

Okay...just for fun you are going to use it for pulling a 11500 lbs fifthwheel for 2000 miles every month..

I think any of them would probably perform satisfactorily for that task. When if comes to running 60 to 100 thousand miles a year with some pretty heavy loads and various terrain, I've had excellent results with the Duramax-Allison combination. The earlier ones did have some frequent injector problems, but the guys I know running the later ones from '05 and up have not hadmany injector failures. I think the warranty has been kicked up to 2oo K for the earlier ones. The Allison 5 or 6 is almost bullet proof. It may have happened, but I've never personally known anyone having a failure of the Allison tranny. I've never had to be towed in any of the Duramax I've owned andhad to limp back only twice. Both times I limped in were due to a fuel filter clogging and both times I had been fueling at Love's truck stops. I now change the fuel filter every 15,000 miles and if I can avoid it I don't stop at Love's.Based on what has been written in some of the truck forums, theolder Dodges with the manual transmission were plagued with tranny failures. But the little Cummins 6 pak was as good as gold and I believe it routinely had better fuel mileage than the stock Duramax. I don't know crap about the new bigger Cummins. The old Power Stroke 7.3 always seemed to be a good performer and relatively durable and reliable with no significant failures up to about 200K miles. After that, I've heard they really went down hill unless you did a complete rebuild. I know a few guys running the newer Ford Power Strokes and most seem to like them, although I've also read that they were prone to break down for a variety of different reasons. The new twin turbo must be a piece of crap, at least that is what I hear from every one I know that is running them. A visit to the local Ford dealer usually finds a lot of them in with problems and at a very low mileage too. But there will always be "brand loyalty"and a certain amount of bias among each of us. My own experiences, the local dealer where I buy the trucks, andprice have a significant influence on what I buy. My bet is that any one of the top three dieselswould perform well if they're maintained properly and treated okay. I've often said that I wish someone would slap a beefed up little Cummins 6 pak in front of an Allison 6 speed, and I'd buy it. I wouldn't care what flavor it was or how it looked...that would be a tough combination to beat. And it may be coming soon![/quote]

As much as I love my two 7.3L Fords....   Based on the info and feedback I have recieved on the topic I believe this would be a great comination.

Ford Cab - Cummins Motor - Allison Tranny.

Ford, Dodge & GM all have thier good qualities and they all have thier bad qualities.  Good point Gator,  what you are going to do with the truck will make a difference.

Hanging out in San Diego for the weekend...  only got one parking ticket so far...

Eric, you beat me to it!!! You can't beat an inline 6! But the Dodge has Tranny problems (yes, personal experience) and quite frankly, I can't stand to sit in it!!! That is one of the most uncomfortable seats you can get! (Personal opinion, but thats what matters right!) I had a '96 Ford 7.3 with twin turbos when I was doing HHG and have had a couple of 7.3s around the ranch! They do a dang good job, and are tough trucks for beating up on! Tried a Chevy on the ranch, the truck itself just couldn't take the beating! Also, the Fords have always seemed the most comfortable to me! But the tranny could be stronger and the new strokers just aren't that 7.3! and as I said earlier, you just can't beat an I-6!
Now, I do really like my Duramax (Current truck) and that Allison is Awesome!
So, in short. I want that I-6 Cummins in a FORD truck with an ALLISON 6spd (Think they'll make a 7-spd?) transmission!

And for informational purposes, Ford has owned Cummins for quite a few years, but Dodge has a LOOOONG contract on it, so don't go thinking that there will be a big change there anytime soon...
Also, International (also a division of FORD) is buying out the GMC Med-Duty division, so look for that Crap Stroker in those soon! (Hopefully they will get smart and use the Izuzu motor for it, but I doubt it...)

And for no more than your example of 2000 miles a month, I'll use the 78-83 El Camino with rear air-shocks and balanced 350!

Laterz,
Gator

I know that the 2000 mile figure is low for those of us that drive for a living. I wanted to use a " all around" number. Most of us are moving between 500 - 750 miles a day and that changes everything, but I will stick to my ford as I love the seats...Never am I sore at the end of the day. and I trust the truck to take me into the middle of nowhere NV and not leave me stuck..

I am glad to see that people agree that each truck has its perks!! I also agree with that!

I vote "none of the above" because you left out the professional grade line of trucks. Sorry I am biased because I own one.

Gator,

If I'm not mistaken Ford and International are severing ties with one another that is why International is hooking up with the GM medium duty line. I believe Don (or someone else) posted an article about it somewhere in the forums awhile back.
