TheShuffleofAngelsWings (7/23/2008) What sort of insurance do I need? I am new to this so I need a few suggestions please. I spoke with my ins. lady, and she was at a loss to what kind of coverage I am needing as well. I would very much appreciate some feedback. God speed folks, and God bless!!After reviewing your profile information, I assume you're asking about insurance required to transport other people's property interstate for hire. Is that a correct assumption. If so, let us know and someone will advise you. However, you should also be aware there is much more required beyond insurance. Essentially, to be a compliant motor carrier you'll need either $300,000, 750,000, or 1,000,000 commercial BIPD and $5,000/$10,000 commercial cargo insurance depending the size of your truck (truck & trailer) and what you haul. That assumes you are not hauling HazMat or passengers.

| That is a correct assumption. Hauling ins. is what I need. I have no trailer as of yet, so I am just using my pickup. I know, not much to be made that way, but need to get started somewhere. Thank you for your reply, still would like to hear from you. God Bless and God Speed!!!!!

| If your insurance does not know what you need, I would find a commercial insurance co. It depends on what you are going to haul and how much weight. If you are going over 10.001 lbs you need Dot & Mc authority also, this requires a boc filing for insurance with FMCSA any commercial insurance will know this in the trucking industry. CMV (commerical motor vehicle) is defined as a vehicle having GVWR of 10,1001 lbs or combination of vehicle and trailer GVWR or actual weight, which ever is greater. This is the rating of vheicle or trailer, not what they weigh Example: 1/2 ton truck has GVWR of 6500 to 7000lbs depending on model. This would leave 3500 to 3000lbs payload on the truck and trailer combined, unless trailer is rated for more than you would be over the 10.001lbs. Does not leave to much to haul with out proper authority. A 3/4 has GVWR of 9000 lbs or more could only haul 1000 lbs with out authority 1 ton GVWR is 11,500 if hauled 1 lb it would need authority to haul for hire interstate to be legal When you get insurance the will ask if you need a boc filing. Most on this site say no because they tell them they are under the 10,001 lbs requirement. This will save 2/3 of the cost of insurance because of the boc filing. Boc filings means as long as this is filed with FMCSA the insurance has to cover what ever happens under the authority that it is listed under. Insurance can not come up with any excuse not to cover claim. This is why proper carriers with authority have the higher cost of operating. Now less say you for instance you went and got all of your insurance and did not have a boc filing because you told the insurance you were not going to be over 10,001 and they will ask. Now you are going across state lines for hire with your 1 ton and pulling a boat off of this site. You get in a accident, Cops find that you or for hire and over the 10.001 lbs and are hauling illegal with out proper authority, also insurance will investagate and find out same because you would not be the first one that was hauling over the limit for what you bought insurance for. Results: You probaly go to jail, hughe fines and your insurance will not cover because you are hauling illegal and over your limits The end results could be a horrible for everyone involved. You going to jail, fines and the shipper loosing his boat with out insurance on it. I hope you get the right insurance and the proper authority if needed, your asking so you must care. Venting a little because of all the non compliants hauling over the 10,001 lbs and telling shippers they have the proper insurance. They do till something happens and they are caught over the 10,001 lbs commercial vehicle class. This is not right to the shippers being at this kind of risk with out them knowing it Just my thoughts

| One last thing that Marineexpress forgot to say, if you did get into that accident your insurance will NOT PAY, they are always looking for any loop hole not to pay a dime but he forgot to say besides the jail time you could be fined upwards of $10,000.00 dollars or both. THEN here is even the worse part they could and most likely would take your house and anything else you own worth anything, SO is it worth doing this without the proper AUTHORITY? In my case it wasnt I had to much to loose but some people dont care they do this day in & day out. I would love to see the look on some SPOUSE's face when they are told, "OH BY THE WAY HONEY THEY ARE IMPOUNDING YOUR HOUSE to settle a DOT CLAIM because I was to CHEAP to do it the right way. I hope the info has helped and happy Transporting. If you need anymore info just ask there are a great bunch of guys here that would be more than willing to help. Tony
This is a message to all the people that are using this site to ship something USE A DOT COMPLIANT CARRIER ONLY Its the Federal Law that anyone that transports ANYTHING for any kind of PAYMENT be a DOT COMPLIANT CARRIER. It doesnt matter if its as small as a BREADBOX or as large as a ARMY TANK the CARRIER NEEDS to be DOT COMPLIANT Ask for their INSURANCE COMPANY INFO before your shipment is picked up to protect yourself from loosing your item. I am now just using this site for ENTERTAINMENT PURPOSED ONLY and will not bid on or take a shipment from this site
