Is it wrong to ask for shippers to pay us a deposit up front before transporting anything for them. In our contract we ask for at least 50% upfront before shipping is scheduled. But we will take less on a deposit like 35%. Well while biding and getting booked on U-ship, we did our normal thing and the shipper backed out on us and said we were running a scam by asking for a down payment. We don’t like to use western union or any thing like that. We use ether Green dot pre pay credit cards or paypal. That way the shipper/customer has records of everything. Well here are a few over all question is 1) Are we doing the wrong thing by asking for a deposit up front?? 2) Do we *the transport company* get the money that the shipper pays u-ship, and if we do when do we get it?
Thanks everyone

They probably think your running a scam since you show no authority to transport for hire. In that I mean no DOT or MC #S. How do I know that? Well you offer to haul anything under the sun and you only offer insurance at $0.60 a pound. That insurance is used by licensed HHG carriers and is not allowed by DOT for motor vehicles. So maybe think about becoming legal and then the shippers may take you more seriously.
As for thr the deposit the shipper pays uship, you do not see that. Read the user agreement and it will explain it to you.

| Eric is right . Without authority you have no right to be hauling , never mind asking for a deposit . But I know many haulers that ask for an upfront deposit to cover expenses if a shipper cancels without good cause .

You have the right to run your business as you see fit. If your customer does not want to agree to your terms then you have to decide if you want their business.
Also I would suggest you read the user agreement which will answer many of your questions as to how this site works.

| Tell them to read the user agreement under sections 4 and 5. It basically explains the whole process. In this day and age where you can get flagged for burping in the Q&A board, it is not against the rules to refer them to it to better explain what is going on so long as you don't try to. It is also NOT against the rules to break it down for them if THEY ask you for the explanation in a "QUESTION ABOUT YOUR BID". Gotta be careful about that one. Just refer them to the user agreement, sections 4 and 5. While we are on the topic of the user agreement..........it also clearly states in there and in the fraud prevention section that "an additional deposit required by the TSP is NOT TO BE PAID BY ANY NON-BANK TO BANK METHODS SUCH AS WESTERN UNION, PRE-PAID CARDS, GREEN DOT CARDS OR SIMILIAR METHODS". Uship prohibits this action and IT WILL RESULT IN AN IMMEDIATE SUSPENSION. When you click on the main "community" page scroll to the bottom right of the page and click on "fraud prevention". It will break the whole thing down for you. There user agreement is longer than the bible but you might want to read through it real good.

| be real careful about talking to the shipper about the fees uship charges, if you mention fees or uship cost or anything about uship taking money they will ban you for 30 days....been there. now as for the compliant issue, no way jon client would ever know that .60 per lb means he can not ship cars. also as a former bootlegger, i will tell you the client does not care at all. this is the walmart of shipping, roll back the prices, they look at this like an auction not a way to ship. i even had on guy when i told him i need to know soon on a shipment tell me that the auction was not over and i did not have the best price.

It is all quite simple, Would you pay B4 your stuff shows up ? I think you know the ans. In fact I have a shipment listed right now...You ought to see them run like fleas from a fire when I said N.W.I.H. was I going to pay first ! May the REAL companies stand up ! LOL ( We have not ever collected first )
when you pay less you get less

| I am sorry but I completely disagree with all of this because no matter what company you deal with whether it is UPS, FedEx or what have you, unless it is a business to business transaction where the job is billed no company will do a job without getting paid first. Would like to see half of these customers get the low rates they get here with the big shipping companies. They cant and that is why they show up here, so asking for half of the job to pay for expenses is not a lot to ask. Paying cash is kind of a risky move without getting your shipment and that is why credit cards are a good way to protect both parties. PayPal is not a good payment processor as far as the service provider goes because for one they are not a bank and yet uship promotes its use. The slightest impatient from the customer leads to a hold on funds that is needed to complete a job causing all kinds of problems sometimes no warranted. Some people on here make it seem they are a multi-million dollar company that can afford to lose if a customer doesn't pay. Well there is 2 sides to this fraud part and I think for the most part there are people on here trying to do good work and make an honest living and probably have families they are trying to support. Some of you old timers should really think about the things you say because I am pretty sure you all started out not knowing jack about this business and it took years to learn what it is all about. Have a great trip everyone and be safe out there.
