I have a 3x3 2" ball hitch. My ball has quite a bit of rust on it. Would this keep the hitch from unhooking fully. Also would keeping high temp grease on the ball make things better.

I use a grease that's made for ball hitches. Using regular grease may break the ground contact that's needed for lights, electric brakes, etc. The special hitch grease maintains the ground circuit. I personally use the Reese brand. It's available at most RV centers. And it's not that expensive.

You shouldn't rely on the hitch for the ground connection between truck and trailer. That's what the white wire connection is for.

I use the same grease on my hitch that I use for the wheel bearings on my truck and trailer. It works very well.

We have a winner! The correct answer! Sounds like you've been around the block a couple times, that and a bit more common sense than most.

Is this what you were asking about?

Dielectric Grease:
–noun
1. a nonconducting substance; insulator.
2. a substance in which an electric field can be maintained with a minimum loss of power.
