I was just wondering if service providers have to pay a fee to place a bid. I was reading through some shipments and see providers asking questions, including quotes and telling the shipper to let them know if they are interested and then they'll place a bid. I don't see a reason for this unless they have to pay just to bid.

The answer to your question is no; but... The reason service providers often do not bid until they get a response from the shippers listing is mainly because many shippers port listings with sketchy or few detailsand never respond or review thier Q&A or active bids. Moving a load often involves timing and routing issues so before a service provider makes a bid they often need more info from the shipper. Additionaly many shippers are often times just price shopping and sticker shock leads them to change thier purchasing plans resulting in a DOA abandoned shipment listing.

The most common issue is timing and the lack of response from the shippers. There are listings posted here that are 30 days old and the shipper never responds to any bids or Q&A. Sevice providers are constantly on the move so in 3 days they could be 2000 miles away from where they were when they placed a bid. If a bid gets excepted and then cancelled the service provider gets penalized as a cancellation strike against thier feedback rating.

From my perspective I like to know a shipment is legitimate and active before I place a bid so I am not wasting my time. Bidding does not cost the service provifer $$$ here but time is money and often times when on the road broadband wireless bandwidth cost $$$.
